Despite repeated pleas from his father to “speak up”, a young man opted to remain silent when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court today.
As a result, Omar Goddard, 21, was ordered to spend the next three weeks on remand at the Psychiatric Hospital where he will be assessed.
Goddard, who lives at Little Bay, Pie Corner, St Lucy, will then reappear in the same court on September 23 having pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.
While Magistrate Douglas Frederick repeatedly tried to speak to a dazed-looking Goddard as he stood in the dock, the youngster refused to answer any of his questions.
Instead of answering the magistrate, Goddard could be seen shaking his head and muttering under his breath, much to the displeasure of his father.
After telling his son to answer the questions being asked, to no avail, his father then told the court that Goddard was an outpatient at the Psychiatric Hospital.
But in a shocking turn, Goddard then denied that the man was his father, prompting Magistrate Frederick to remand him to the mental facility.
“I have to find out what is going on in your head. You will have more time to talk while you are at the Psychiatric Hospital,” Frederick told him.
Police prosecutor Station Sergeant Irvin Kellman told the court that on September 1, police officers encountered a broken down vehicle on Dalkeith Road, St Michael around 9:10 pm in which Goddard was an occupant.
After he was approached, police spoke to him
about his conduct. When he was searched, police found a white paper wrapping in his pants pocket containing the drug.
