A minivan conductor who could not pay a $1 000 fine forthwith, was given 220 hours of community service instead.
The fine was imposed on Derry Griffith of Waterloo Gardens, St. Michael by Magistrate Graveney Bannister when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court today.
Griffith pleaded guilty to having 18 excess passengers on the vehicle along Black Rock Main Road on February 24 this year.
After hearing the fine, he asked for time in which to pay. He told the court that he had already paid over $2 000 in fines last week.
The sentence, which carried an alternative of 100 days imprisonment, was then changed to a community service order.
The conductor will be working with the seaweed removal project and returns to court on December 7.
