On Sunday police stopped Lloyd Fabian Birch and later charged him with seven traffic offences.
After the Douglin Road Weston, St James resident was arrested and searched, two greaseproof wrappings holding a small amount of marijuana were found in his shoes.
Birch pleaded guilty to the drug offence before Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court earlier this week.
The 33-year-old explained: “I don’t really use it often; I just went to a little party.”
In determining what to do with the first-time offender, the Magistrate originally considered community service. He was of the view that Birch would be suited to assist with clearing the beaches of the Sargassum seaweed.
“Since he likes weed, this would be a good weed for him to deal with.”
The Magistrate reconsidered and ordered Birch to pay $350 costs instead, after learning that performing the community service would have some effect on his job as a truck driver.
The alternative to paying costs forthwith was seven days in prison. It was paid and no conviction was recorded against him.
He left the courtroom with the usual warning from Magistrate Frederick that you are only a first-time offender “once”.
His traffic matters were transferred to the District ‘A’ Traffic Court and are scheduled to be heard on June 19.
Attorney-at-law Allan Carter appeared on behalf of Birch.
