When two women accused of causing a disturbance at Workhall, St Philip appeared in the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court yesterday, one was remanded and the other placed on a bond.
Shamika Nathania Alleyne, a 26-year-old assistant cook and Chericee Latoya Crawford, 21, both of Workhall, were jointly charged with the June 10 offence. Crawford faces a further charge of assaulting Alleyne on that same date.
Prosecuting, Sergeant Azel Skeete told the court that on the date in question, a group of women was at Workhall. A disturbance occurred which involved sticks and stones. At some point during the melee, police were called.
Alleyne was arrested and charged. The first-time offender pleaded guilty yesterday.
When Magistrate Christopher Birch questioned her about the events, Alleyne said she had a quarrel with someone else, not Crawford. As she was leaving the area to go home, Crawford hit her first on her hand before giving her another blow to her head. They began scuffing and immediately after, Crawford’s brother and a cousin came and held on to her (Crawford).
Alleyne said the argument in the district started over one person posting a picture of another. The Magistrate sternly told Alleyne that she should have kept her “mouth out of it” since it had nothing to do with her.
“It did not benefit you,” Birch stressed. “All it got you is a new hairstyle because it caused you to have to shave your hair.”
The mother of two was placed on a bond for the next year and had been banned from all Crop Over events. If Alleyne breaches the bond, she will have to pay $500 forthwith or spend 21 days in jail.
“Keep away from any place that may cause you to get your head chop open.”
Crawford pleaded not guilty and was remanded until next Monday.
