COURT TODAY BLOCKAn attorney’s bail application on behalf of a Christ Church rape-accused was turned down today.

After Dr Waldo Waldron-Ramsay QC had made his submissions, he was told by Magistrate Douglas Frederick that the matter against his client, Jamal Jarrel Thomas, was still of “a sensitive nature” and he felt it best that he should remain on remand at this time.

Magistrate Frederick urged the prosecution to “get the file together as quickly” as possible so that the case against the young man can “begin to be ventilated”.

Thomas, of Apartment 5, 6th Avenue Club Morgan, Christ Church, is facing five indictable charges of raping a 14-year-old girl on June 15 this year and assaulting her five days later.

The 23-year-old is also charged with knowingly having pornography in a computer system for the purpose of publication, that he published the pornography by circulating it through a computer system and used a computer to send an electronic communication which was obscene and intended to cause distress to the complainant.

Those three offences allegedly occurred between November 1, 2014 and June 29 this year.

Waldron-Ramsay submitted that his client was a young man who was gainfully employed and resided in a house belonging to his mother. He added that Thomas was not one known to be involved “in disreputable things.”

Magistrate Frederick also reminded the attorney of the prosecution’s objections, which were that there was a fear that Thomas would interfere with the girl if given bail;  the court had also been asked then to take note of the dates of the allegations.

The magistrate said the dates seemed to suggest “a progression” of some sort and formed part of his reason for denying bail.
