A 25-year-old lifeguard admitted assaulting Malachi Joseph with intent to rob him on June 22, 2013.
Sarah Rachel Newton, of Parkinson Field, Pine, St Michael had previously pleaded guilty but changed her plea today before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant.
Sergeant Neville Reid told the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that Newton and Joseph were living in a Dayrells Road, Christ Church apartment at the time of the incident.
Joseph was in the process of saving US money which he kept locked in a drawer. Meanwhile Newton, her brother Pedro and another man conspired to rob the complainant.
On the date, Joseph went to work and returned home around 3 a.m. the following day. On entering the apartment he saw Newton using her cellular phone. He left to go outside to his vehicle and saw the accused’s brother and another man sitting in her car.
The complainant spoke to them and returned inside to tell Newton that her brother was outside. She opened the door for her sibling and soon after he left. There was then a second knock on the door which she answered.
Joseph, who was inside his bedroom, heard her scream and he came to her assistance. He saw a man pointing a gun and demanding money.
As Joseph took his wallet from his pocket, it fell and as the assailant kept his eyes on the wallet, Joseph rushed at him and they fought.
He was getting the better of the man, the prosecutor said, when Newton and her brother pulled Joseph off the attacker, who ran off.
Police investigations later revealed a plot among the three parties. Newton’s brother, Pedro Carlos Newton, of Lascelles Terrace, Pine, St Michael has already pleaded guilty to the offence.
Sarah Newton, a first-time offender, returns to court tomorrow where she is expected to meet with a probation officer.
Asked by the magistrate what she had to say, Newton replied that even though some of what the prosecutor said was not accurate, “the incident did take place and it was my fault”.
