A 59-year-old father pleaded guilty today to wounding his son on Monday.
Kerwyn Winston Deshong was remanded to HMP Dodds until tomorrow when he comes back to court.
The Simmons Land, Fairfield, Tudor Bridge, St Michael resident went before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant.
Sergeant Neville Reid explained to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that the father and son live at the same house and on November 16 the two had an argument.
It came about because the father was playing a radio which his son, Kerwyn Jnr, thought was playing too loudly. The father ignored him and the son eventually lowered the radio and left home.
On his return, his father was standing in the doorway with a cutlass in hand, preventing the son from entering, the prosecutor said. The father then began making chopping motions towards the complainant, who moved away and got two rocks which he threw at his father.
The son then tried to run away but fell and it was while he was on the ground that his father inflicted two wounds, one to each knee. He had to seek treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The convicted man’s version of the events were that he was outside cleaning the yard when his son came home and found him playing gospel music; which caused him to “begin cussing and carrying on”.
“My son always disrespect me,” Deshong said, and he never pulled a cutlass. In fact, his son remained outside the house and threw rocks and “lick out all the windows”, while challenging him to come outside.
As a result, the father said he “slap him with the sword” because he was angry.
“I am very, very sorry for that . . . I love my children and I need to address that. I cannot live my life like that all the time,” Deshong said.
