Guyanese teenager was remanded to HMP Dodds after appearing in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court earlier today.
He is Darius Alan Ramsammy, 18, of Belleview Gap, Waterford, St Michael.
He pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Douglas Frederick to the charge of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm upon Allan Stephen.
Station Sergeant Neville Watson’s principal objection to the teen’s bail was that “he is a non-national who has been living here illegally since 2011”.
The prosecutor further informed the court that Immigration was interested in Ramsammy, whom he feared would not return to court if granted bail.
When the unrepresented accused was questioned by Magistrate Frederick as to whether that was true, he said it was and explained that he came to Barbados in 2011 to visit his uncle. He also said he intended to apply for status here but he only recently turned 18.
The accused, who has no criminal record, will return to court on December 16.
