Trying to do a good deed for his brother almost landed John Reeves in hot water.
Asked to come to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court this afternoon in an effort to prevent Matthew Alfonso Reeves from being remanded to HMP Dodds, it was found that John had a current warrant out for his arrest.
But after questioning the outpatient at the Psychiatric Hospital as to why he had not attended court when he was supposed to, Magistrate Douglas Frederick opted not to take any harsh action.
His younger brother Matthew, 27, a landscaper of Odessa McLean Road, My Lords Hill, St Michael, was in court to answer charges that on August 31 he unlawfully assaulted Christina Reeves and used the threatening words, “I would cut your throat and leave you childless. I would leave your son motherless”, with intent to cause her to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against her.
He pleaded guilty to the first charge, but not guilty to the second.
After the complainant revealed that both she and the accused lived in the same house, Magistrate Frederick told Matthew that while he was willing to grant him $2,000 bail with a surety, he would have to stay elsewhere.
However, it was only after John arrived to confirm that his brother would be staying with him at his Upper Hunte’s Street, Baxters Road, St Michael home, that Magistrate Frederick learnt there was a warrant out for his arrest for failing to attend court.
While not punishing him, the presiding officer ordered John to report to Central Police Station every Wednesday by 10 a.m.
He also warned Matthew not to “trespass” on his mother’s residence, telling him that he had “no right to be there.”
The Magistrate cautioned him that if he failed to comply with those orders he would be remanded to prison.
Both men will return to court on October 20.
